I was given an opportunity to do something exotic with my life; there are many things that I want to do in my life. As a young woman living with Down syndrome I decided that I wanted to go to college and find the answers to my dreams. I feel very honored to be a part of this program that Living Resources and The College of Saint Rose started through the OPTS program at the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD). It is called The College Experience Program and yes, it finally came true! Even though I have dreamed about going to college, I never imagined it would really happen! I guess, “it’s a moment like this”.

The College of Saint Rose was founded in the year of 1920 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Carondelet. It was known as a Roman Catholic college for women. Its founders selected the name of Saint Rose.

My mother used to work at the college. So, as a 13 year old, I had the dream of going to The College. Now I’m following my own dreams. I like the classes I am taking. I registered for 010 Portfolio. Portfolio is about making personal goals and looking into the future. I want to take black and white photography, budgeting classes, and I want to have a book published. Creative writing is something that I want to do, too. I‘m still holding down a job and have to manage my time carefully.

I really enjoy living on my own. I feel like I have more independence now. I’m getting used to my new routine.

The future for me has just begun. In the beginning of the program, I can admit, I was kind of nervous. My college experience has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. I feel like I am a grown-up. All of my friends, like Jessica, Lauren, Megan, Kate and Corey have inspired me in so many ways. They already graduated from college. I have been wanting to do this. I wanted to leave the nest and be independent. Now I am!
